What do I need?

There are things you need and there are things you may desire to have for better performance.

First off you need a working computer. Then you'll need at least 2 Network Interface Cards. If you are on dial up, you'll only need 1 network card in addition to your modem. I haven't found a network card that hasn't worked with IPCop yet, but just in case, verify against the Hardware Compatibility List. You'll also need some type of hub or switch. You can use the ports on a wireless router if you like.

Back to the computer itself. IPCop will run on a machine as old as a 386 with 32MB RAM and 300MB of disk space. But I wouldn't recommend running it at all without at least a Pentium 200Mhz and that's without any of the fancy features we want. For a machine that can filter web content I'd recommend at least a Pentium II 400Mhz with 192MB RAM and 1GB of disk space. The more RAM the better in this case because if you start swapping , you're going to notice.

Next, make sure you have a CDROM and Floppy and edit your BIOS settings to enable booting off the CDROM. While you're in there, look for a setting that says something like "Halt on all errors" and make it not halt for anything. That will (hopefully) enable the computer to not halt when you try to boot it without a keyboard. The Floppy drive isn't required for install, but it's nice to back your configuration up to later.

After you have all of the above ready, all you need now is the software. At the IPcop.org website, click on Downloads, IPCop 1.4.x Series, and search for the IPCop 1.4.10 ISO. (you can just click that link to the left, and yes I know there is 1.4.11 out, but I've had problems with the plug-ins so I'm avoiding it)

Next, burn that ISO to a CD using your favorite burning tool and get ready for some fun!

Additional Software needed later:
